The principal of West High School has been placed on administrative leave, but the reasons behind his removal remain unclear. Parents and students are seeking answers, while a former school board member criticizes the district's handling of the situation.
The principal of West High School has been placed on administrative leave, leaving parents and students wondering about the circumstances. Information regarding the situation is scarce, and a former school board member characterized the handling of the matter as highly irregular. Jessica Spight, a parent of a West High School student, expressed her dissatisfaction with the lack of communication from the school or district.
She emphasized the importance of informing parents about significant changes affecting their children's education, regardless of the nature of the situation. KUTV obtained a screenshot of an email purportedly sent by the Salt Lake City School District to West High School faculty and staff on Friday evening. The email confirms that assistant principal Wayne Culley has assumed the role of acting principal. It assures the school community that the rest of the West High administration will continue their duties and provide support during this transition. District spokesperson Jason Olsen issued a statement confirming Culley's appointment as acting principal, highlighting his experience as an assistant principal at West High for the past two years and his prior role as principal at another Salt Lake District school. Former Salt Lake City School District Board member Michael Clara stated that parents are reaching out to him seeking answers about the principal's leave. He noted that teachers are also lacking information and that the community is feeling disheartened. Clara believes that the district will eventually be compelled to provide a statement regarding Wright's leave but criticized the manner in which the faculty was informed, suggesting that a more appropriate approach would have involved notifying teachers first, ideally through the superintendent, followed by communication with parents. He pointed out that, as far as he is aware, parents have not received any official notification about the situation. Clara further stated that teachers at West High School reported attending a faculty meeting on Monday morning, but the reasons for Wright's leave were not disclosed
