West Ham United have promised to hand an ‘indefinite ban’ to a fan alleged to have attacked two German football commentators during Thursday evening’s Europa League semi-final.
The ARD Radio broadcast was briefly interrupted when Michail Antonio equalised for the home side during the first-half, with the commentators saying they were ‘being attacked’ by home fans around them, before one of their headsets was ripped off and thrown to the ground. Commentator Phil Hofmeister subsequently told listeners he and colleague Tim Brockmeier ‘have’ never experienced anything like it.
Later on Twitter, Hofmeister added: ‘We are doing okay. Best wishes to all West Ham supporters who love football and respect their opponents.’ The incident has marred what was the Irons’ biggest home European fixture in the club’s history, having failed to progress past the second round of the competition or its predecessor the UEFA Cup in four previous attempts.
The visitors won by a single goal thanks to Ansgar Knauff’s opener within the first minute, and Daichi Kamada’s second-half winner. While manager David Moyes and his playing staff will be concentrating on turning things around in the second-leg, the club is now trying to identify the supporter responsible for the incident, and has promised an ‘indefinite ban’ to anybody found responsible.
