Nato allies have moved to secure vital links like roads, bridges, cables, pipelines and even satellites
“Allies are increasing security around key installations, protecting critical infrastructure, with more presence, resilience and intelligence-sharing,” Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday“We are stepping up our intelligence-sharing and surveillance across all domains, from space to undersea capabilities.Defence ministers attended a meeting at Nato headquarters in Brussels
The focus on infrastructure comes amid concerns that Mr Putin may attempt to extend his faltering war in Ukraine by targeting energy, transport and communications links in other European countries. As Russian forces have retreated on several fronts over the past month, he has escalated his rhetoric, mobilised troops, ramped up his missile strikes against Ukraine and proclaimed the annexation of its eastern regions.Although it remains unclear who was behind the explosions under the Baltic Sea, many officials assume it was orchestrated by the Kremlin in an attempt to close off Europe’s energy supply options.
While the Nord Stream pipeline was already shut down before the attack, there are fears that other energy sources might be targeted., Azerbaijan and Algeria as well as liquified natural gas from the US, Norway, and Algeria, which is delivered by ships and requires offshore terminals to transform back into gas.
