West African bloc seeks ways to engage with Niger junta FMTNews FMTWorld
Ecowas has activated a standby military force to be deployed as a last resort if talks fail.
The Economic Community of West African States said yesterday that it aimed to send a parliamentary committee to meet the coup leaders, who have imprisoned Niger’s president Mohamed Bazoum and dissolved the elected government, in the seventh coup in west and central Africa in three years. The coup leaders, headed by general Abdourahamane Tiani, have rebuffed prior diplomatic efforts by Ecowas, the US and others, raising the spectre of further conflict in the impoverished Sahel region of west Africa, which is already dealing with a deadly Islamist insurgency.
At stake is not just the fate of Niger a major uranium producer and western ally in the fight against the Islamists – but also the influence of rival global powers with strategic interests in the region.
