A R350 000 lawsuit looming against the Free State department of education after a viral video of a pupil being assaulted.

The parents of a 16-year-old Free State black pupil, who was assaulted by a white pupil, have accused the school of perpetuating racism.The aggrieved father of a 16-year-old schoolboy who was assaulted at Welkom Technical School is demanding R350 0000 in compensation after a viral video showed the pupil being strangled and beaten in the presence of a teacher.

According to the letter, the assault occurred after a verbal banter between the group of pupils. It says that following the banter, one of the pupils, known to the assaulted teenager, started to punch him. When he fought back, the assailant's friend, a fellow white pupil, assisted by punching him and forcing him to the ground. While on the ground, the assailant, a white pupil, started to choke the black pupil, who could not free himself from the stranglehold the assailant had on his throat.

He added that his son was still attending school, while the pupils who assaulted him were not yet suspended. “The department and its employees are bound to exercise such skill, diligence and competence in caring for and supervising the minor and to ensure his safety, as can reasonably be expected from the department and its employees.”
