Weird messages over loudspeakers advising people to remain in place awaken Scripps Ranch area residents [Breaking]
Neighborhoods in the vicinity of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar were awakened Saturday morning by a message advising people to remain where they were until further notice that appeared to be coming from the base.
The recording, delivered by a male voice in a calm monotone, sounded like it was coming from loudspeakers. On the Nextdoor website several residents said they heard the recording around 1 a.m. and others continued to report hearing the message well past 4 a.m. Some speculated it might be a prank. The exact wording was unclear but appeared to advise people to remain in homes, office and — perhaps — barracks until further notice. There were no helicopters in the area and no emergency sirens from police or fire officials were heard either.
A watch commander at the San Diego Police Department said early Saturday morning they had received numerous phone calls about the message, and contacted the military base. The base said they did not have any training or exercises ongoing, and said there were no incidents to report. The messages appeared to cease around 7 a.m.
