Weekend heat shatters Bay Area temperature records

At halfway point of snow season, Bay Area residents flocked to pools, parks and ice cream shops.

This weekend marks the official halfway point of California’s snow season, but record-breaking high temperatures continue to bake the state, sending residents to pools, parks, barbeques and ice cream shops.

The heat is expected to linger on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service. Traditional February temperatures will return to cool on Monday and Tuesday, with accumulating cloud cover. This pattern change — albeit a modest and brief one — is called an “Inside Slider” low pressure system, bringing brief snow flurries to the Sierra Nevada.

At San Jose’s Santana Row, sisters Arabella, 15, and Mariela Damarillo, 12, took their chess match outside, playing near the cool central fountain. The Khosla family staffed up in advance of the warm weekend at Rick’s Ice Cream shop, the small business they own in Palo Alto. Many families with kids donned shorts and flip flops and sat on benches in front of the shop in a scene reminiscent of a blistering summer day. Khosla and her family are grateful for hot winter days because the business helps keeps the shop afloat amid constantly increasing rent prices.

The wildflower season is off to an early start, according to the California Wildflower Tipline. Douglas Iris are already blooming along the trails of Point Reyes National Seashore. Bermuda Buttercups and Beach Wormwood can be seen at Asilomar State Beach in Pacific Grove. The calla lilies in Carmel’s Garrapata State Beach are already in full bloom. Pink Indian Warrior is decorating the edges of Filoli Trail in Woodside.

And: Its absence is depriving us of rain and snow. Our storms are going north, through British Columbia and dropping down into Alberta, the Great Lakes and the eastern half of the U.S..
