Pigment print.Some of the words that came to mind over and over again when I visited the newLawson was born in Rochester, New York, in 1979, and her work focuses primarily on rejecting and subverting conventional modes of Black representation through photography.
But then you start to notice the tiny details Lawson uses to complicate her narratives. You might wonder about the hidden meanings in the clutter she strews across a table, the curtains she hangs on an unfinished wall or the ankle monitor adorning one of her more majestic models. The longer you linger, the more you’re sucked into the delicious complexity of the images Lawson creates.
David Lynch shot a film in secret with Laura Dern and it's expected to premiere next month at Cannes 2022:
