A referendum that would decriminalize possession of low-level marijuana and implement other criminal justice reforms is nearing the amount of signatures needed to get the measure on the May municipal election ballot.
Ananda Tomas, who founded ACT4SA, says she is confident the group will make the deadline.“We would have preferred a wider margin, but if we can stay on track like we have been, we can get it,” Tomas said.
The proposal would also end no-knock warrants and police choke holds and calls for a justice director that would oversee the implementation of the new policies. The director would be appointed by the mayor and city council. "How are we saving scarce city resources by creating a new position for an individual with limited to no prior experience doing so?" the statement asked.
