Buffy Thompson, a 12-year experienced wedding photographer, has shared her insider information on what to avoid during a wedding. Thompson has seen her fair share of terrible best man speeches, animals, and white dresses.
She recommends that couples bring along their pets, as long as they are well-behaved, as they are easier to work with compared to drunk and lairy wedding guests. Thompson has noticed a rise in smaller weddings due to the cost-of-living crisis, with more intimate occasions with 30 to 60 people becoming increasingly common. She finds these types of weddings to be her favourite, as they focus more on the marriage rather than a big party.
Despite the advancements in phone cameras, Thompson stresses that hiring a professional photographer is essential for capturing all the little moments. She also advises against asking her to make the mother of the bride look younger or thinner, as this is not possible. Instead, Thompson reassures them that they look lovely. She recommends that couples get on the dance floor, as this creates some of the best photos.
Thompson also reassures that she will only send the couple the photos they look their best in, after sifting through thousands of photos. She also advises against worrying about awkwardness, as wedding photographers are professionals at getting couples comfortable in front of the camera. Thompson has also experienced couples sneaking off for a 'quickie' during the wedding, but notes that this is usually obvious to everyone. She recommends keeping the canoodling for the wedding night.
Thompson also advises against having long and drunken best man speeches, as these rarely go well. Finally, she finds big group shots to be her least favourite to shoot, comparing it to 'herding deaf cats'
