Jazz sometimes gets a bad rap as a genre that’s grown stuffy, stodgy and best enjoyed sitting down. And then there’s Riverview Jazz’s Jersey City Pier Fest, which for the next three Fridays will prove that jazz in all its permutations can be fresh, funky and, most of all, fun., will continue on Sept. 15, 22 and 29, at J. Grundy Plaza at Exchange Place. The free, 6 p.m.
“It’s funny but as soon as I mention the word ‘jazz,’ everyone has a completely different idea of what it means,” said Bryan Beninghove, the gifted saxophonist and director of Riverview Jazz, the non-profit that produces Pier Fest, the Jersey City Jazz Festival, and many other community events. “Even if you talk to the players, nobody can tell you exactly what jazz is. So, we present a wide variety. We toss salsa in there, we toss in some funk and Romani jazz, straight bebop and swing.
