Imagine a retirement filled with vibrant experiences, not financial anxieties. For many Americans, this dream is clouded by the unknown – particularly the looming specter of healthcare costs. We surveyed over 520 Americans between the ages of 60 and 70, some already retired and enrolled in Medicare, others anticipating retirement and Medicare eligibility. What we learned was startling. The cost of healthcare is the single biggest worry in retirement today, according to our research.
Unfortunately, only a third of current retirees say they saved money ahead of time specifically for healthcare costs in retirement. Most of those we reached out to told us they’re satisfied with their current financial situation. However, we uncovered a concerning lack of financial preparation for retirement, which may help to explain why healthcare costs are such a big worry.
Among those not yet retired, most believed they would be able to retire between ages 65 and 67, and yet only 29% these believe they will actually have enough money to last them through retirement. That’s why eHealth and Retirable have partnered on a mission to help ensure better health and wealth outcomes for American seniors. We believe that enrolling in the right Medicare coverage and enlisting the assistance of a financial advisor can help everyone enjoy greater peace of mind in retirement.
