It was much angrier than on our phones 😳
After hours of getting soaked in relentless autumnal downpours, you're desperate to take shelter anywhere to get the blood flowing in your fingers again and to dry off, even just a little bit. And The Grot hut hidden in the grounds of Rydal Hall on the edge of Windermere in the Lake District is just the place. Except it isn't just anywhere. It's magical.
The main hall has 30 bedrooms and boasts its own chapel, dining room and oak-panelled library. But what sets this country estate apart from the rest, is the little brick hut, built in 1668, with a slate roof and a secret it hides, that is only accessible via a winding, uneven gravel path parallel to the river, which was raging and flowingly rapidly, almost angrily, during our visit.
You have to know it is there, to have any chance of finding it. And when you do, it's easy it understand why a video of a family who had travelled several hours to get there, recently went viral on TikTok; a clip CumbriaLive was alerted to after we had stumbled across the hideaway in our search and a colleague said "OMG I'VE SEEN THAT ON TIKTOK BEFORE".
How to find it Make your way past the 'quiet garden' in front of the house at the bottom of the steps and follow the path through the trees, passing the rock pool on your right. The path will take a sharp turn left and head down downwards the river.
