The Irn Bru Carnival is Europe’s largest indoor funfair and a Glasgow institution, delighting generations in the city since its founding in 1919. It has once again returned for the Christmas holidays.

This year’s instalment boasts 65 rides and attractions, from head-spinning rides for thrill-seekers to traditional carousels, tea cups and waltzers, plus an array of games, from shooting galleries to bingo and basketball hoops.
There are mind-boggling rides like the ‘Superstar’, new for 2024, which spins at exhilarating speeds as it hoists its riders high over the centre of the hall and points them down as they fly around, noses pointed towards the floor from almost ceiling height. And braver people than I took on the ‘Air Raid’, a returning ride located near the entrance to the SEC.
The carousel is new for 2024, and is perfect for families, as is the Crazy Astroslide and what may be the stand-out pick for families, the Dodgems. There is a surprising variety of rides and attractions, and it would be a challenge to find any person in Glasgow who wouldn’t enjoy at least a few. The improbably fast Waltzers left each and every rider beaming, and are conveniently located next to the food vans for an ill-advised after-dinner spin. Behind the Olaf-themed Frozen Coaster, which delighted little ones and adults alike, there is an inflatable play area for small children.
