You know the original -- now try the contender to its crown

Holly Tree Chippy has cemented itself in my top spot for the quirkiest, most authentic and essentially, tastiest Lancashire food. As we’ve previously reported, we’ve gone to this particular eatery for some of our county’s historic bites, including a double dab, rag pudding and John Bull.

Currently named “the Cheese and Onion John Bull thingy”, Holly Tree are looking for a catchy name that describes exactly what the dish is and if you’ve never tried a John Bull, here’s our plead for you to do so. Opting to go for lashings of salt and vinegar on top, I’m told it’ll take 10 minutes for my John Bull to be freshly prepared. I hand over a very reasonable £2.80 for my new culinary adventure and wait for it to arrive.

I open it up and I am surprised to see the filling immediately burst out, showing to me that no scrimping or scraping has happened here. When you cut it open, you see the layers of potato, filling and a light batter, ensuring what you’re about to eat is enjoyable and not heavy and difficult to manage.
