The Texas aphid 'goo' is nearly gone.

If you got a decent rain Sunday — and much of North Texas did — that sticky substance coating cars, sidewalks and lawn furniture likely washed away.

The substance, called honeydew, is secreted from aphids, tiny sap-sucking insects that live in trees. And this year’s honeydew storm was unlike any in recent memory. Aphids — which are about the size of a pinhead — invaded pecan trees.has lived in North Texas for more than 50 years and said he has“The entire state is covered in goo,” Sperry wrote in his newsletter. “Frankly, it’s getting on my nerves.”

Fortunately, Sunday’s rain not only washed away the honeydew, but also many of the aphids, who won’t have enough time to repopulate before the trees shed their leaves. Any sticky remains can be washed away with a hose.“We are doing the happy dance, and so is anybody who got rain,” he said. “We have all gotten a fresh start.”But Sperry added that North Texans have a new pressing issue: Temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s Tuesday night for the first time this season.
