are one thing – but why are STIs so on the rise? Noble believes it’s a generational issue about not seeing protection as something that is necessary. “As an age group, many of us just missed HIV/Aids,” says Noble. “Younger people were really inundated with campaigns warning them of the dangers of unprotected sex, but many people of our demographic were married and raising families. It felt like it didn’t apply to us.
“Fast-forward some years and suddenly people are telling you to use a condom and you’re like, ‘Well, I’m not going to have a baby! What do I need a condom for?’ Wearing a condom was usually associated with not getting pregnant and not so much about safety, so I think people are not recognising thatBeyond sexual health, Noble believes that older people are largely absent from discussions about sex more broadly, with organisations instead focusing on younger age groups.
“The advice I’d recommend to everyone is to think about the kind of relationships we want, rather than the relationships we were told we should want. Ask yourself: what does a good relationship and good sex mean to you,” says Noble.and they’re trying out stuff sexually that they’ve maybe always wanted to try. For me, this time of life is about being open and having a readiness to explore your own sexuality.
Communication is key, he continues, adding that he has been struck by the number of people who admit they cannot speak honestly with their partner about intimacy. “The inability to talk about things with your partner is a problem and one that particularly affects our generation,” he says. “We weren’t necessarily brought up talking about personal things or feelings.”
