We recommend in the race for Texas House District 115 | Opinion
Dallas Morning News EditorialDemocrat Julie Johnson does her homework. The two-term state representative is more progressive than most Texans, but she understands the issues and knows how to mobilize government resources to solve problems. Though we can’t endorse all her policies, she gets our recommendation against Republican challenger Melisa Denis.
Denis is community-minded, having served on several foundation boards and currently chairing the audit committee of the University of North Texas Board of Regents. But her understanding of governance seems shallow, and her policy proposals aren’t well-researched. Johnson, on the other hand, presented specific and researched proposals to increase teacher pay and boost the state’s share of student funding to relieve local property taxes.
She trumpeted her efforts to make the Electric Reliability Council of Texas subject to open records law. Transparency in government is a crucial issue, and that’s another smart reform we could support.
