In an era when school board races too often present polarizing, ill-informed candidates, District 2 voters can be thankful that three capable, serious people are standing for this office.
On college readiness, a statistic in which DISD is lagging, Tran and Weinberg had an understanding of what is at stake, but Malonson offered a deeper dive.“We need to meet students where they are, early on, and make them see the connections between their education and a path to a sustainable life,” Malonson said.
“Unions make ideological stances based on one issue, but where they missed the forest for the trees is that education is very nuanced. If we are going to get more money for teachers, we should take advantage of that and refine the system rather than just saying no,” Malonson said We would urge Malonson to carefully consider this position. While he is right that neighborhood schools need to improve, DISD’s embrace of choice schools has gone hand-in-glove with improvements in the district’s reputation for improvement.
