We recommend in the Democratic primary for Texas House District 114 | Opinion

John Bryant, Charles Gearing, Alexandra Guio, Chris Leal and Kendall Scudder square off for the Dallas seat. This editorial is part of the Dallas Morning News editorial board’s slate of recommendations for the 2022 primary.

In a field of five sharp, passionate candidates, we recommend criminal defense attorney Alexandra Guio in the Democratic primary for Texas House District 114. Guio, 34, brings a history of community activism and a strong grasp of issues important to this diverse district, which after redistricting has a slight minority majority. District 114 now covers downtown and parts of North and East Dallas, including the M streets, Casa Linda and the White Rock Lake area. Two-term Democratic Rep. John Turner is not running for reelection. A native of Colombia whose family came to the U.S. when she was 4 for her mother’s brain surgery, Guio boasts eight years as a prosecutor in the Dallas County district attorney’s office. She worked in the sexual assault unit and contributed to efforts to clear the backlog of rape kits. Guio also spent five months as a liaison for the DA’s office during the 2019 Legislature, working with lawmakers to draft bills and negotiate compromise language. She graduated from Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law in 2013, the year she became a U.S. citizen. Guio focuses her campaign on health care, education, women’s reproductive rights and voting rights. She favors expansion of Medicaid in Texas, which she believes would give working families a boost while creating a “ripple effect” of available cash for other services and helping improve the state’s overall fiscal outlook. On elections, Guio testified last summer against Senate Bill 1, the divisive and sweeping Republican measure that became law. Another solid candidate is John Bryant, who carries the experience of 14 years in the U.S. House and nine in the Texas House. Bryant, 74, who lost a primary for U.S. Senate in 1996, wants to protect democracy by helping Texas Democrats gain a House majority. The other three candidates, who also have volunteered for numerous civic causes, are lawyer Charles Gearing, 38; small-business owner Kendall Scudder, 31; and Dallas ISD teacher Chris Leal, 32. Scudder lost a Texas Senate race to veteran Republican Bob Hall in 2018.The winner of this primary will face Republican Mark Hajdu in November.
