“It’s like waking up in the morning and looking at the person next to you and they’re not as good-looking as you thought,” a Tory conference delegate and libertarian Liz Truss sympathiser says of the Prime Minister’s disastrous start.

And there are at least signs that immediate attempts to restore Cabinet discipline after a chaotic conference are working. Suella Braverman, who wasand suggestions that Ms Truss could look to relax immigration rules to boost growth, is now understood to be cowed following a slapdown from No 10 over her freelancing.

But while the Home Secretary is falling into line, her call for overall immigration to come down speaks to a wider unease in the Tory party. Other attempts by the Prime Minister’s allies to forge Tory unity appear to be failing. Several of these are likely to activate rebellions on the Tory backbenches and could also spark more Cabinet revolts. One minister toldthat it was “blindingly obvious” that Ms Truss was picking the wrong battles, noting that there were just “one too many” potential fights with Tory MPs, even with a working majority of 71.

One Tory veteran of previous parliamentary battles adds: “There is no way they are getting planning through. They are just going to be stuck.”long-term nature of Britain’s economic problemsBut they believe that within months, it will be possible to show that the country is on the right track as long as inflation is falling, a recession has been avoided, and – crucially – companies have announced new investments which will yield growth in the future.

But in another sign of potential trouble for the Government, another industry source insisted the supply side reforms, rather than simply tax cuts alone, were crucial in achieving this.
