When Bryant first started watching Tahoe’s bear population about 25 years ago, she said she’d get occasional calls from homeowners reporting bears in their neighborhood on a sunny day in the dead of winter. Now, Bryant gets calls on a near daily basis all winter long, reporting bear encounters. She says some bears are not hibernating at all, and others may be sleeping for only a short amount of time.
