Weasel words aren’t helping. It’s time we were brave enough to name the real threats.

Every crisis has its cliche. Since October 7 last year, Australia’s favourite buzz phrase is “social cohesion”. Nodding along, we know it’s a problem; our social cohesion is fracturing. It’s also a euphemism, because state and federal governments don’t want to say outright that they’re worried about Islamic extremism in Australia, inflamed by the Hamas-Israel conflict.

The Home Affairs media staff came back with a series of anodyne, media-managed lines. The most significant of these was that the “package of grants were designed to address the urgency and immediate requirement to support social cohesion”. Effectively circular: the problem is a lack of social cohesion, so the government was solving it by supporting social cohesion. Urgently.

But what am I saying? We’ve already fast-forwarded to that bit. A court case between One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi over a previous iteration of this hackneyed debate means there’s already an exchange of this nature in the news. Making Islamic terrorism the responsibility of all Muslims or domestic violence the responsibility of all men has the perverse effect of alienating decent people, which can worsen the problem.
