That was ten years ago, and instead of ushering in a new era of beautiful visual effects, CGI almost seems to have declined since. Occasionally, there’s a frighteningly impressive display like, but this year has been oversaturated with unintentionally terrifying computer-generated creations. Like Super Mario, Sonic’s cartoonish features were never meant to translate into realistic proportions; the blue-tinted chupacabra was so dreadful that it almost seemed suspicious; would a studio really be Machiavellian enough to sabotage Sonic for the sake of some free memetic advertising? , the solemn promise to destroy the new Sonic and replace him with something less Lynchian.
Perhaps the ubiquity of motion capture technology is also contributing to the problem. At its best, motion capture brings not-quite-humans like Thanos, Alita, and the aforementioned Andy Serkis characters to life. , at least judging from the trailer, seems to have utilized the technology without the craftsmanship, coating actors in digital fursuits, barely tweaking their too-human faces to fit their fursonas.
