“These stories live on, and so all these people live on.” Teen Vogue spoke with 5 Holocaust survivors who shared how they are passing down their history with their grandchildren.
is reaching their 90s and confronting difficult questions about how their stories should be passed on, retold, and recast for the generations to come. In many cases, their grandchildren have taken up the task of ensuring that the experiences, lessons, and testimonies of their grandparents never expire, and that they remain urgent, essential, and accessible fragments of history.
“You sometimes feel that you don’t want to say everything to everybody, including, sometimes, your kids,” said Mark Schonwetter, an 89-year-old Holocaust survivor. After the Nazis occupied his hometown of Brzostek, Poland, his father was detained and Mark, his mother, and younger sister fled to the Jewish Ghetto in the nearby town of Dębica, where they thought they would be safe.
Today, Berg works as a volunteer for Jewish education organizations like 3GNY, a non-profit dedicated to maintaining the legacy of survivor stories that teaches the grandchildren of Holocaust survivors how to preserve and protect their grandparents’ experiences. “Antisemitism is much more ripe now than ever before,” Friedman said. “We try to make it not just about Judaism and antisemitism, but also about racism and discrimination,” Berg said.
“My mother told me about how she would cover me up with her own body, so I would stay alive.” When they returned to Odessa on April 10, 1944 —Nellie , now 86, remembers the exact date by heart — the city was destroyed, all the businesses shuttered, and sickness widespread. “It was very difficult to live through it all,” she said.
