I was to spend many, many more hours in their company over the ensuing seven years in London, learning and digesting first-hand accounts of the history of our struggle for freedom. It was a privilege I cherished. They simultaneously challenged and inspired me. Denis even recruited sportspeople such as John Barnes and Justin Fashanu to a glitzy launch in upmarket Kensington – a far cry from our usual community centre, church hall and town hall venues. He had an ongoing battle with the ANC bean-counters to get money for his merchandise stock. They weren’t easily convinced that there’d be a return on investment, but Denis was both persistent and persuasive, and he succeeded.
We arrived to a packed hall and tremendous excitement in the air. We were a little late and were stuck at the back, but Madiba had yet to make his appearance. When he did, we couldn’t immediately see him, but sensed his aura, which triggered an explosion of jubilance in the hall. It was an intensely emotional moment when Denis and Madiba finally touched base. They simply hugged and stared at each other for a long moment. A proper reunion had to wait for another day.
