’s presidential campaign was 15 years in the making. The actual campaign turned out to last just 101 days. The distance between those two numbers—and especially Bloomberg’s late, abrupt decision to enter the 2020 Democratic presidential race last November—is one major reason that on Wednesday morning, the billionaire former mayor of New York City just as abruptly announced he was quitting, making his run the most expensive self-financed dud in American political history.
By that point it was too late for Bloomberg to compete in the four early states—Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. The larger problem became that Bloomberg wasn’t very well known by voters living outside the Acela corridor. What they did know was that Bloomberg was super rich.
