After a Kia was carjacked, crashed, and caught on fire in downtown Jacksonville, members of the neighborhood are feeling uneasy.

He told us in Spanish, “It was a little scary because we all have families and we didn’t know what was headed our way.” One neighbor I spoke with wanted to remain anonymous, but says he’s concerned knowing children were behind the wheel, putting the community at risk.“Anybody running stop signs and crashing is dangerous,” the anonymous neighbor said. “But when you’re dealing with kids – is extremely even more dangerous, because their brains aren’t developed, like adults are and they don’t make the right decisions behind the wheel.
Last week, JSO warned the community about an increase in Kia and Hyundai thefts. A TikTok challenge has been linked to the crimes nationwide. These vehicles are more vulnerable because they don’t have an anti-theft device. This is one of many videos which explain how to break into and steal cars.
