When American troops withdrew from Afghanistan in August 2021, the world watched in horror as the Taliban swiftly issued an alarming series of decrees targeting the rights, autonomy, and general wellbeing of women and girls. Global outrage rightfully ensued, with news outlets, corporations, and outlets like this one drawing attention to the growing humanitarian crisis.Yet, as time passed, the media spotlight faded—and with it, much of the world’s attention.
When Jennifer expressed her willingness to support this project, we built a team on the ground , we found a cameraman and camerawoman, trained them how to film in a safe way, and then started working seriously on this project.Some of the situations in this film feel so fraught. How did those who were filming gain access to them? SM: If I wanted to make this film now, today, it would be impossible.
