Anyone living in California may be wondering just how bad the wildfire smoke on the other side of the country is right now.

Images of the East Coast engulfed in wildfire smoke, with the sky in New York City glowing an eerie orange hue, have sparked memories for Californians who saw similar conditions in 2020 after a rare summer lightning storm ignited massive fires across the Golden State. The sky inAnyone living in California may be wondering just how bad it is on the other side of the country right now.

People take photos of the sun as smoke from the wildfires in Canada causes hazy conditions in New York City on June 7, 2023. Smoke from Canada's wildfires has engulfed the Northeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the US, raising concerns about the harms of persistent poor air quality.“Here, we’ve had events where the smoke has gone on for a month,” Wexler said. “I don’t think it’s going to happen there. The winds are going to kick up and blow it away.

“The other thing that happens back East that doesn’t happen here is rain,” Wexler added. “They’re in a drought right now, which is making it worse. But it’s going to eventually rain, and that’s what ultimately puts out the fire. We may go six months with no rain here, whereas that doesn’t happen back East.”

The smoke covering the East Coast is coming from several massive wildfires in eastern Canada. A north-to-south wind pattern, which Wexler said is unusual, is pushing the smoke southward. If the winds shift, could the smoke drift into California? “There’s no way that that smoke is going to come down here from eastern Canada,” he said. “There could be wildfires in western Canada that could bring smoke here, but even that would be very unusual.”
