Town Council meeting covers fire safety amid the devastation in L.A. County, plus cityhood updates and a volunteer effort to identify potholes

Brent Brainard, deputy chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, briefs the La Jolla Town Council on local fire safety at the council’s Jan. 9 meeting. The deputy chief of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department had expected to give a presentation about rain and floods when he spoke at the Jan. 9 meeting of the La Jolla Town Council. But wildfires ravaging the greater Los Angeles area overtook that plan.

People attending the meeting expressed a variety of concerns about fire safety in La Jolla, including what routes local residents could take out of the area, where they can receive information from San Diego Fire-Rescue and the status of fire hydrants. Association President Trace Wilson said at the Town Council meeting that as of the day before, the group had raised $28,000. But with the new addition of $17,000, “you can see the momentum that’s happening,” he said.

The proposed city’s boundaries largely align with the 92037 ZIP code, stretching north-south from Del Mar to Pacific Beach and east-west from Interstate 5 to the ocean, excluding UC San Diego and Scripps Memorial Hospital. Sierra Corban, director of local outreach at King’s Cross Church on Soledad Mountain Road in Pacific Beach, said Send Relief “approached our church and three other churches to say ‘Hey, we’d like to do a Serve Tour in San Diego. Can you tell us the needs of San Diego?’
