In so many workplaces, the phrase"we are family" is thrown about by organizations eager to foster a warm, inclusive, and supportive environment . At first blush, that seems positive and welcoming. However, with any implicit promise comes the responsibility to follow through with actions. And just like that, the romanticism of this expression quickly unravels when juxtaposed against corporate actions like layoffs, pay cuts, or more bureaucratic treatment of staff.
Tera Hudson, a California-based mom of two and a marketing leader, who was recently impacted by corporate layoffs stated, “It's incredibly harmful for companies to lean on 'we are family' mantras, because it's simply hard for them to understand or uphold the value that true family means commitment, beyond just the good times”.
Professor Linda Hammersmith of Stanford University advocates for this approach:"By framing the relationship as 'professional' rather than 'familial,' companies can foster a culture of mutual respect and accountability without overpromising. This clarity helps in setting boundaries and aligning expectations, making the inevitable business decisions less personal and more understandable" .
