A disgruntled school principal has asked “comrade Minister Angie Motshekga” who she should call on to get masks, gloves & sanitisers for pupils & teachers. This as principals and school management teams were scheduled to return to schools early this week
“We have been waiting for personal protective equipment . We did our part by showing up, but the government has not delivered.
“I’m not allowed to talk to the media, but I will tell you this: We do not have any of those things. We don’t know when we are going to get them. I’m in the dark. I cannot risk the lives of my staff members by instructing them to come to school when there are no safety measures in place,” he said.City Press visited a number schools in Gauteng this week to check if PPEs were delivered as principals and school management teams were scheduled to return to schools early this week.
The majority of schools visited either did not have PPEs or were closed without any teaching staff on site. Jasper Zwane, spokesperson of the education department, said that the provincial public works department had been asked to speed up and finish 375 capital projects intended to improve sanitation infrastructure in schools.
More than 400 schools do not have running water and proper toilets, and there are no other options provided. I don’t think we are readyHowever, Walter Hlaise, provincial secretary of the SA Democratic Teachers’ Union , said the province’s schools were far from being ready to allow pupils to return. Zwane said principals had started reporting for duty at some schools this week. They had received orientation training and had undergone screening. They were also given PPEs.
