Today’s TV political correspondents wouldn’t be so hesitant. They would already have been on their way. I am less surprised by the emotional response today but am still taken aback by the depth of feeling. Of course, we knew our ageing monarch would soon pass on. The intensity of the shock, though, was unexpected. It’s as if a powerful, comforting presence has suddenly been removed.has left a gap in all our lives. Even tough old news hands, myself certainly included, cannot dismiss the experience with a world-weary sigh.
