The provincial Education Department said it was trying to get the occupants, living in approximately 110 informal homes near Cathkin High School since 2018, off the land.
CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department said that a group of people living on land alongside a school in Heideveld posed a safety risk to teachers and learners.
The community has been living in approximately 110 informal structures on land near Cathkin High School since 2018. Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said that the department was trying to get the occupants off the land. "An eviction order was first granted in 2018. The matter is now again before the courts, and we await an outcome. The land belongs to the provincial government and has been illegally occupied."
Hammond said Cathkin High School operated on the property and the occupied land was required for education. The city indicated that it would provide alternative accommodation to the community, should the eviction be granted.
