Waymo, a leading robotaxi company, will begin testing its self-driving vehicles in Tokyo, Japan, in early 2025. The trial, conducted in partnership with local taxi companies, seeks to refine Waymo's AI system for navigating unfamiliar road conditions and densely populated urban areas.
Waymo announced plans to deploy its robotaxis in Japan in early 2025. The trial will take place in Tokyo in partnership with Nihon Kotsu and GO, two local taxi companies. The trial aims to help Waymo 's AI-powered self-driving system adapt to driving on the opposite side of the road and in densely populated urban environments. Initially, human drivers will operate the vehicles. Japan is aiming to introduce robotaxis due to a shrinking population and a shortage of taxi drivers.
Waymo is a leader in the robotaxi sector, currently operating public services in Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Austin. The company plans to launch full services in Austin and Atlanta in 2025, with Miami to follow in 2026. Earlier this year, Nissan announced plans to launch its own robotaxi service. Waymo's former competitor, Cruise, planned to launch in Japan by 2026, but General Motors, Cruise's primary backer, announced in December that it is integrating Cruise's resources with its own self-driving technology team
