Striker played for San Diego Surf, Del Norte High School, Stanford and Georgetown before joining Ireland's national team

Striker Kyra Carusa, a San Diego native and member of Ireland’s World Cup team, has inked a contract with the club for the rest of the season. The Wave announced the signing Wednesday morning.

“We started following Kyra closely this offseason, and we are excited to welcome her to the club,” Wave coach Casey Stoney said in a news release. “She will bring healthy competition to our forward group and provide the team with much-needed depth for the rest of this season. She’s just coming back from the World Cup and eager to make a difference to help her hometown make a run deep into the playoffs.

But make no mistake: Carusa is a San Diegan. The daughter of former San Diego State linebacker Rick Carusa, Kyra played club soccer for the San Diego Surf and was a star at Del Norte High School, scoring 58 goals and notching 50 assists over three varsity seasons. Carusa’s 26-goal, 34-assist season led her high school team to the 2012 CIF-San Diego Section Division III final.

The success led Carusa to Stanford, where she played four years before transferring to Georgetown as a graduate student. Sky Blue FC made Carusa the 19th overall pick of the 2019 NWSL Draft. She instead went overseas, playing for Le Havre AC in France, HB Koge in the Danish League and the London City Lionesses.

The Wave will host Gotham on Saturday at Snapdragon Stadium in the first of seven remaining regular-season matches. It’s unclear whether the Wave’s returned World Cup stars will suit up. The club says forward Alex Morgan, defender Naomi Girma and goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan are currently being integrated into training. Wave midfielder Emily van Egmond and forward Sofia Jakobsson were both eliminated earlier this week in the World Cup semifinals. They’ll play Saturday for third place.
