First-year soccer club hopes to sell out Snapdragon Stadium for match against L.A. rival

“We are so proud to be a part of such a supportive community,” said Wave President Jill Ellis, “and we cannot wait to sell the whole place out.” A Portland crowd of 25,218 set the current record in 2019; the new San Diego venue, recently completed in Mission Valley, can seat 33,000 fans and accommodate 2,000 spectators in standing room-only areas. The projected Saturday night crowd Sept. 17 would more than quadruple turnouts for Wave matches at the University of San Diego’s Torero Stadium, capacity 6,100.

Wave star Alex Morgan called the ticket sales a “testament to two things: women’s soccer in the U.S., and the San Diego Wave and what we’re building here.” The 7 p.m. contest pairs the Wave against fellow expansion team Angel City of Los Angeles. Concluding their 22-game season, the Wave will return to Mission Valley for a Friday night match, Sept. 30.
