Encinitas woman inspired by love of mountains has WaterSmart award-winning landscape in San Dieguito Water District that is both beautiful and low maintenance

Oh, the things you do when you first buy a house that make you wish you’d known better. For Melanie and Rick Cullen, it was planting three liquidambar trees in their front yard around the time they moved into their Encinitas home back in 1986. Yes, the trees are beautiful, particularly in the fall when their leaves turn blazing red and gold. But those leaves drop, along with their spiky, ball-shape seeds.

Mexican sage plants, with their large spikes of purple flowers ground the space. Even in late winter, the garden is blazing with color and, as Cullen planned strategically, when those fade, others will bloom. Cullen said the response from neighbors has all been positive. “They love the yard,” she said, “especially after we first put it in. People would walk up and down and up and down, commenting on how much they like it.
