Fire officials were called to Carlson Boulevard and S. 43rd Street about 5 a.m., officials said.

RICHMOND — A water main break early Wednesday forced authorities to close about a four-block stretch of a major boulevard, fire officials said.Richmond Fire and East Bay Municipal Utility District officials were at the area of Carlson Boulevard and S. 43rd Street, where the water main break happened, according to fire officials. They were called there about 5 a.m.

Water surged across Carlson Boulevard and was flowing down it. Authorities closed Carlson Boulevard for about a three- or four-block section, according to Richmond Fire officials. It was possible even more of the boulevard could be closed, they said. It was not known immediately what caused the water main to burst or how long it would take to repair and get the boulevard back open.
