Edison residents are experiencing a gradual return of water service following a major water main break that left over 20,000 people without water for over 30 hours.
Water flow is beginning to resume in neighborhoods affected by the water main break in Edison. While crews are working diligently to make repairs, the water flow will be a gradual increase over time.Thousands of people in Edison have been unable to wash their hands, take showers or flush toilets for more than 30 hours as repairs on a 20-inch water main break in the area of M Lane and Woodbridge Avenue are ongoing.
At this time, some water valves are being turned back on, which will result in some homes having more flow of water, said Joshi in a statement. “However, restoration will take time because additional repairs remain ongoing. We have 80-100+ year old pipe valves and reopening them also poses the risk of them breaking.” Upwards of 20,000 residents have been without regular water service since midnight Thursday. The 20-inch water main break is affecting water service for residents along Woodbridge Avenue, Route 1, Route 27, parts of Talmadge Road, and Edison Town Hall. Emergency contractors and Edison Water Utility crews worked through the night to restore the water supply, but additional repairs remain ongoing, said Joshi. In the meantime, the town is distributing water at two local fire stations — one at 25 Plainfield Ave. and another at 1997 Route 27. Each household is allowed two gallons of water and must show proof of residency. The Edison Senior Center on Woodbridge Avenue has also been opened for public bathrooms and water distribution. Additional public restrooms can be found at: Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Post 3117 at 53 National Rd., Herbert Hoover Middle School at 174 Jackson Ave., and James Monroe Elementary School at 7 Sharp Rd. The Jewish Community Center of Middlesex County and YMCA of Edison on Oak Tree Road are open for showers, according to township officials.Township offices will remain closed Friday due to the water main break, and the lack of water service is also taking its toll on local businesses
