A new study has found that watching sport is good for your health, with the brain's reward circuits being activated when you see your favourite team in action
Scientists have found that watching your favourite football team play can enhance both physical and mental well-being. In addition to providing enjoyment and relaxation for many, the researchers explained that watching sport - especially in large crowds - extends "beyond entertainment" by promoting a sense of community and belonging.
The research team from Japan utilised a multi-faceted approach - merging data analysis, self-reports, and brain scans - to comprehend the link between sports viewing and well-being in the general population. In the second investigation, an online survey aimed at exploring if the relationship between sports viewing and well-being differed depending on the sport watched, involved participation from 208 individuals. The participants were exposed to a variety of sports videos, with their well-being assessed before and after watching.

Prof Sato said: "Both subjective and objective measures of well-being were found to be positively influenced by engaging in sports viewing. By inducing structural changes in the brain's reward system over time, it fosters long-term benefits for individuals."
