Lenin-Mao sculpture sparked online debate before it was erectedThe FBI San Antonio Division said in a statement that it is investigating “reports of a possible explosion” that occurred at about 3 a.m. Monday. “There were no injuries and we are working with our federal, state and local partners to determine what happened. No additional information is available at this time,” the FBI said.
Liz Burt, director of Urban Activation + Play at Centro San Antonio, said she’d heard the piece had been struck by lightning and went to view the installation this morning to look at damage. Burt said Centro had received calls from concerned patrons and neighbors regarding smoke and a loud explosion. The nonprofit, which focuses on downtown development and related services, is working with investigators by providing its camera footage of the area.The sculpture, called “Miss Mao Trying to Poise Herself at the Top of Lenin’s Head,” was erected in March. It depicts Mao Zedong balancing on top of Lenin’s head.
