Watch | Unpacking obstetric violence in SA’s public health facilities
Obstetric violence, which is violence that pregnant or birthing persons face, includes psychological and emotional violence at the hands of healthcare practitioners. This violence, neglect and erosion of these women’s dignity can endure from the time they enter hospital to when doctors and nurses harass them in the birthing room.So said UN special rapporteur on the right to health Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng. She was speaking at a seminar on obstetric violence and women’s right to health.
“Directly when health workers physically or verbally abuse pregnant women and persons and it is structural through its organisation’s laws, policies and practices that normalise the neglect and violation of sexual reproductive health rights,” Rucell explained. The phenomenon is widespread globally. Patients are just easy targets to be blamed. We are just blaming patients for systematic failure and because doctors and nurses are the faces of the health system, but they have no power to make the minister approve a particular budget.
“It is very hard as a student, when you see something wrong, to speak up, because you might be threatened that you will not pass medical school. There are limitations to what a junior doctor can do in this patriarchal system.”The UN special rapporteur focuses on comments and complaints from patients. They are meant to act by writing to the state about allegations from patients, what kind of action is expected and how to prevent the violations.
