It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No — actually, it’s a 37-foot-tall inflatable Minion in the sky.
The excitement in the air was palpable Saturday morning, as handlers and their family members prepared for the kickoff to the parade season. Being up-close and personal with the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons never gets old, she said.The new balloons showcased Saturday included the banana-loving Stuart the Minion from Illumination, the lovable pup “Bluey”Baby DINO by Sinclair Oil. The event also featured a new “balloonicle,” of Striker, the U.S. Soccer Star by FOX Sports, in celebration of the 2026 FIFA World Cup coming to New York and New Jersey.
The Macy’s team also conducts computer analysis for different wind conditions, so it can anticipate how the balloons will move in varying conditions.Since the parade started marching balloons in 1927, there have been a few mishaps with the large floating figures, mostly minor. For example, in 1956 a balloon figure of Mickey Mouse was deflated after catching on a street sign. And in 1991, a Kermit The Frog balloon lost air after running into some trees.
“You’ve got it, you’ve got it!” exclaimed one handler, as their team successfully navigated a corner with the 52-foot-tall “Bluey” balloon.
