The drama follows the British royal family throughout the reign of its current monarch, Queen Elizabeth . In the new season, we see the Queen and her family at the end of the 1970s, as they secure the line of succession and search for a bride for the heir to the throne, Prince Charles . Charles winds up in a whirlwind romance with Diana , and the country falls in love with what appears to be a picture-perfect fairytale.
At the same time, the kingdom contends with the controversial policies of its first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher . The tension is thick between Thatcher and the Queen as the country goes into conflict with Argentina in the Falklands War. The upcoming season will also portray Charles and Diana’s sons, the young princes William and Harry. It will be the last season to feature Olivia Colman, who will turn over the role of the Queen to Imelda Staunton for the show’s final two seasons.
