Scherzer’s former teammate Justin Verlander could be the next name he passes on the list.
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer throws during the fifth and final inning his outing against the Kansas City Royals at Globe Life Field in Arlington, June 23, 2024.has reached the point of Major League Baseball’s all-time strikeouts list where each time he moves a rung up the ladder, he’s going to be passing a baseball legend.Scherzer had entered the game tied for 11th all-time on the list, so he needed just one strikeout on Friday to take sole possession.
Verlander and Scherzer are the only pitchers in the top 20 who are still active, though Verlander isn’t expected to take the mound for the foreseeable future. He’s currently on the Injured List with a myriad of issues, and is “progressing slower than the team anticipated”, it could take him as few as four or five starts to catch Verlander, who was his teammate in Detroit from 2010-14.
