In her first interview since the disappearance of her mother, Nancy, Savannah Guthrie relived when she had learned her mom disappeared. She also shared whether she believes her mother’s abduction is related to her fame and the “agony” that her family still “don’t know anything” about what happened.
The TODAY co-anchor opened up to Hoda Kotb in an emotional conversation that aired in three parts on TODAY March 26 and March 27. Nancy Guthrie was reported missing Feb. 1 and authorities believe she was taken from her Arizona home in a possible overnight kidnapping. As the investigation enters its eighth week, authorities are still searching for answers. “I wake up every night in the middle of the night,” Savannah said in the interview. “And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought.” Investigators have been trying to identify an armed and masked man seen in footage recovered from Nancy’s doorbell camera, released by the FBI on Feb. 10. “It’s just absolutely terrifying,” Savannah told Hoda of seeing the video. “And I can’t imagine that is who she saw standing over her bed. I can’t.” Amid the investigation, Savannah has dedicated her time to her family in Arizona and has been away from TODAY since Jan. 30. She will be returning to the show April 6 and spoke with Hoda about her decision to come back. “Its hard to imagine doing it because it’s such a place of joy and lightness, and I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” Savannah said. “I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try.”
