Alex Lance, who will get almost $119K in city settlement, filmed video of when he was shot twice by a San Antonio police officer at a 2020 George Floyd protest.
Alexander Lance was standing near the intersection of North Presa and College streets downtown when he shouted at armed police officers from the sidewalk. San Antonio police were clearing the streets after a May 30, 2020, protest sparked by the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis . The march drew 5,000 mostly peaceful demonstrators, but officers began using tear gas to clear crowds after rioters looted several stores at the end of the night.
City pays $118K to man injured by police in Floyd protest An officer rushed toward Lance to shoot him in the arm with what the city called a sponge round, which is essentially a rubber bullet. Lance cursed, yelling that he was only holding a cigarette. Someone shouted, “Hands up!” Then the officer fired again, hitting Lance’s left leg. Lance, who was 23 at the time, yelled in pain and recorded blood dripping down his arm and seeping through his pants.
San Antonio police use tear gas, pepper spray as George Floyd protest turns violent A city ordinance authorizing the settlement said the officer fired the sponge rounds because he believed Lance was about to throw an object. “Although the City of San Antonio and Defendant officers have vigorously contested this matter, it is in the City’s best interest to settle this matter to avoid the uncertainties and risks associated with further litigation,” the ordinance said.
