WATCH | SA youth and experts agree that state of disaster must end, but disagree about mask-wearing
“I feel like government is getting something from this prolonged state of disaster thing. It [the state of disaster] has done its job, people are no longer getting sick in large numbers, a lot of them are vaccinated now; why would you continue with these unnecessary restrictions?” asked Morena Moahlodi. The second-year University of Johannesburg student said he feels like people no longer need to be wearing masks either.
“We are tired of this 2 000 people cap. We want to have huge crowds now, we are vaccinated, what is stopping us from occupying such spaces at full capacity?” Madhi told City Press: “People are still getting infected with the virus; we are going to have another resurgence; we are going to have other variants. The important thing is that people are not dying in large numbers as was the case previously.”
